Tweets from Troux 2011 conference, day 2
Tweets and links from the second (and final) day of the Troux users (enterprise-architecture) conference in Austin, Texas, on 23-24 March 2011 – once again courtesy of Brenda Michelson, Todd Biske, Mike Walker, Aleks Buterman and others in a very active Tweet-active band of enterprise-architecture folks.
As on the previous post, I’ve edited slightly to remove most of the #Troux2011 and #entarch hash-tags; I’ve also added occasional comments of my own (in italics and preceded by ‘>’, >like this). There’s a lot of it, so I’ll put in a ‘Read more…’ break here.
- toddbiske: Jeff Ellerbe: Any time a company is considering a change, EA should be involved.
- bmichelson: Outside. Not networking. Fearing the wrath of @thomsinger 😉
- bmichelson: Day 2 at #troux2011 is about to start. Keynote this morning is none other than @AngelaYochem of #Dell
- aleksb6: Day 2 at #troux2011 is officially under way with @thomsinger distributing the ab-fab prizes for grand winners of yesterday’s contests
- aleksb6: Next up, Angela Yochem of #Dell services on fulfilling the Great Expectations in #IT at #troux2011
- aleksb6: Angela Yochem of #Dell: “On the back of strong #entarch foundation, distribution of #IT #capability is no longer a threat”
- trouxsoftware: Angela Yochem of Dell: More IT groups wanting to act like product groups, with similar levels of quality, support..
- mfoster2u: Angela Yochem…customer expectations and appetites are evolving. IT needs ambitious transformations to meet biz demands
- toddbiske: @AngelaYochem suggests seeing how the #entarch team would respond to a significant biz change on April 1 as a readiness exercise
- bmichelson: Challenge from @AngelaYochem: Exercise EA minds. What if bank bought an airline? What are your capabilities? Can you repackage?
- aleksb6: @toddbiske @bmichelson some could argue that for the large number of #entarch teams, every day feels like either Apr 1 or Feb 2
- bmichelson: . @AngelaYochem “We must be able to shift with changing/emerging business models.” <– why i promote #changefriendly #entarch
- toddbiske: @AngelaYochem “Many IT shops are not in a position to support business transformation”
- coreycorrick: Success factors to position IT for business transformation are infrastructure simplification and application rationalization
- mfoster2u: Continued demand on flat IT budgets, continued “keeping the lights on” budget, and meet biz demand, reducing IT complexity a must
- toddbiske: @AngelaYochem: Cultural shifts- break reliance on f2f interaction, SMEs, additional funding, and the notion of ownership
- mfoster2u: @angelayochem Cultural shift – break reliance on f2f, SMEs, additional funding.
- mikejwalker: @angelayochem For EA to be agile we need to break the reliance face 2 face communications and rely on mobility, IM…
- bmichelson: . @AngelaYochem “Consider the cultural shifts of agile org. We can’t optimize enterprise architecture on F2F interactions.”
- bmichelson: another: “Invest in business accelerating capabilities: business architecture, acceleration teams, strong tools” – @AngelaYochem
- aleksb6: @AngelaYochem at #troux2011: “Invest in #bizarch acceleration teams to help with unforeseen challenges & fund them out of baseline”
- russn: Dell’s business acceleration team sounds interesting – would like to hear more about it.
- toddbiske: @AngelaYochem: actively manage your own capabilities and career as you do your IT shop.
- aleksb6: @AngelaYochem at #troux2011 – “invest into strong tool sets in order to facilitate faster impact analysis”
- mikejwalker: Completely agree with @angelayochem on the need for continued investment in business architecture
- mfoster2u: It’s time to get uncomfortable and get excited about new opportunities that the evolving IT biz landscape demands
- bmichelson: @ Troux Worldwide: @AngelaYochem – Great Expectations: Ready to Move the Dial in the New IT Landscape? http://bit.ly/gy44mC
- aleksb6: @AngelaYochem at #Troux2011: “Any #CIO that has been successful at enabling and/or leading business transformation is big #entarch fan”
- coreycorrick: Angela Yochem’s presentation on business transformation was great
- bmichelson: Hey, how about “Business Change Accelerator” instead of “enterprise architect”? Inspired by @AngelaYochem’s talk at #troux2011

- aleksb6: Rick Reese at #Troux2011: “If #entarch doesn’t have right information at hand when Biz needs to make a decision, it will become irrelevant”
- toddbiske: Rick Reese, VP of #entarch at Discover, had his team try to build credibility through their IT metadata
- mikejwalker: Discover Card applies LEAN principles to ARB
- aleksb6: Rick Reese at #Troux2011: “establish credibility through metadata – be the one source of decision support information for biz”
- mikejwalker: “Until you have a common vocabulary and taxonomy you have no where to go…” in #entarch – Discover Card
- bmichelson: why, oh why are there application, program module & platform type entities in a business architecture metamodel? >strongly agree
- aleksb6: @bmichelson because that is the vocabulary that is understood inside of that org.. no sense trying to teach ev1 new language
- aleksb6: Rick Reese at #troux2011: “Derive a #bizarch reference model from your metadata and map goals of officers to the model” #incentives
- mikejwalker: Very Clever, understanding incentives -> pull goals of people in the org to map solutions to be relevant
- DeclanKenny: “include exec performance goals in #entarch metadata” – Richard Reese. Now, that will drive adoption.
- aleksb6: Rick Reese of DFS at #Troux2011: “#bizarch reduces requirements definition phase by 30%”
- BobScheier: Rick Reese: If you don’t have information at hand when the business is ready to make a decision, you’ll be irrelevant..
- mikejwalker: Agree -> RT @bmichelson: why, oh why are there app, program module & platform type entities in a #bizarch metamodel?
- aleksb6: Rick Reese of DFS at #Troux2011: “partner w Audit/RIsk and Finance to tie them into your #entarch #ARB process”
- toddbiske: Rick Reese echoes comments of a speaker yesterday who said to make finance/procurement a friend of #entarch.
- coreycorrick: Looking forward to implementing Troux Standards to move off some homegrown ARB tools
- mfoster2u: Rick Reese-$500k in realized savings gettin visibility to architecture. 30% reduction in req phase of projects.ROI with #entarch
- mikejwalker: Leverage before you Invent -> Discover adopted TOGAF to inherit a common vocabulary and repeatable method #opengroup
- aleksb6: Rick Reese of DFS at #Troux2011: “Initiate an #entarch value log – capture cost avoidance along with other traditional measures”
- mfoster2u: Credibility of your EA init comes through VALUE CREATION. Understand the biz need, focus EA efforts, create biz value #entarch
- mikejwalker: Rick Reese “EA is about Strategy and Prevention” <- maybe for the finance industry but for others it will vary
- trouxsoftware: New blog post: Good Vibes and “Love” for Fast EA Results at Troux Conference http://t.co/TyzkFpp
- coreycorrick: Need strong metrics to show value of EA strategy efforts
- aleksb6: Rick Reese of DFS at #troux2011: “What are you going to bring to the table when you get that seat – collect facts and metrics”
- mikejwalker: Rick Reese – set EA strategy through metrics and facts <- key here is to begin with business driven metrics
- mfoster2u: It’s not just creating value with EA. You have to market your success. Its not one moment/one preso. Its continuous.
- toddbiske: Troux 2011: Delivering Business Value with Enterprise Architecture http://bit.ly/gW6RoY
- RamilX: @bmichelson At some point the detail that supports the biz arch is useful to understand gaps, costs, risks, etc
- mfoster2u: Such important session starting now at Troux Worldwide Conference. “Building the Biz Case for EA”.
- bmichelson: @RamilX agreed. but, should be shown as relationships to the business architecture, not part of it. Nit-picky, I know.
- mfoster2u: How do you bridge awareness of EA needs and getting commitment of EA?
- coreycorrick: Implementing EA disciplines requires a “lifestyle change”, like dieting and exercise. Lifestyle changes are never easy, though.
- mfoster2u: Got to have an ROI strategy to validate funding for your EA initiatives.
- BobScheier: Sean Dwyer: Proof of concept with PowerPoint, Vizio, etc. helped show value of EA and pave way for funding for Troux..
- toddbiske: Troux 2011: Building the Business Case for EA http://bit.ly/dQ7qtb
—
- BobScheier: Chuck Keffer: Risk and cost, but also value, are all highest in the transformative phase of an EA project..
- davidcbaker: Chuck Keffer of Troux at #troux2011 – build your EA effort one program / service at a time – wise words.
- pbmobi: @bmichelson Enterprise Architect = Business Change Accelerator => contradictio in terminis for most business people
- toddbiske: I really liked that Sean is leveraging a change mgmt communications expert in their rollout.
- coreycorrick: I find it funny that we cannot even define an “application”. Shows the immaturity of IT and EA discipline. BNSF has same problem.
- aleksb6: @coreycorrick noun definitions are context and stakeholder specific. verbs are not, which is why #capability models are stable
- bmichelson: @ Troux Worldwide Conference: Customer Panel – Building the Business Case For EA : Elemental Links http://bit.ly/eJXTtq
- toddbiske: @coreycorrick there’s a difference in defining it for conversation versus for data collection and analysis

- mikejwalker: USAA “we made a rule, we will not show our [IT] models to the biz” <- show relevant biz info in their language
- mikejwalker: USAA “EA is the headlights of the company”
- mikejwalker: Kudos to USAA on being able to separate EA & Strategy from IT Architecture. They are getting it right!
- trouxsoftware: Michael Pemberton, USAA: EA group is called Transformation and Integration. Interesting rebranding..
- tetradian: @trouxsoftware #entarch as ‘Business Transformation’ etc – most of our successful EA efforts have used this ‘rebranding’
- mfoster2u: Great lunch with my energy industry clients. Focused value-based project kicking off in April across our 3 main apps.
- aleksb6: Reinventing the wheel at USAA: biz likes visualizations, not the hierarchy models normally produced by IT
- mikejwalker: USAA “Business doesn’t care about hierarchy or taxonomy” <- use consumable biz oriented visualizations or analytics
- aleksb6: USAA at #troux2011: “If you show business your model, you deserve whatever you get” <- keep the proof to yourself! http://bit.ly/bF4Vbl

- bmichelson: Troux plays central role in Dell’s architecture, do use other tools around it
- trouxsoftware: Sandy McCoy: EA is thankless job, you need EA to know when your team having a bad day and support them..
- trouxsoftware: Eric Christian: Easier to teach a business person the technology than vice versa, when choosing an EA team..
