A week in Tweets: 26 September – 2 October 2010

Another very long one this week, mainly because of a few variously-lengthy discussions that seem worth including. Otherwise, yes, it’s the usual categories, preceded by the usual ‘Read more…’ link:

Enterprise-architecture, business-architecture, business-strategy, business-innovation and all manner of business big-picture themes:

A useful discussion on values in enterprise-architecture, started off by Nigel Green (@taotwit/@5Di):

  • taotwit: How do we discover the underlying values and value within the system-of-systems that is the enterprise? #entarch <values are the key to the architecture
  • taotwit: A new context for EA? http://bit.ly/cCbhWX #entarch #vpect #EA2010 <“value and values” – strong recommend
  • vernaallee: good post by @TaoTwit aka nigelgreen on An Ecosystem of Value and Values http://bit.ly/9TJ08V
  • ironick: @taotwit I think empathy maps would help #entarch a LOT more than yet more value maps #vpect http://slidesha.re/chQ1VJ <described in more detail in the #bmgen book
  • Cybersal: @ironick @taotwit surely choice of whatever map is  best is context-dependent?
  • ironick: @Cybersal agreed. but if VPEC-T can be used for ANY system, then it’s not context-dependent. I don’t believe in universal models anymore. <my opinion: I think he’s seriously missing Nigel’s (@taotwit) point here, because same applies to empathy-maps: #vpect is primarily used for modelling flows, but values pervade a system – empathy-maps help to identify values, hence are ‘yet more value maps’…
  • taotwit: @ironick I dunno,  what’s the main benefit of empathy maps over value network maps in your opinion?
  • ironick: @taotwit empathy map provides a richer view of diverse kinds of “values” <yup, he’s missing the point – particularly Nigel’s distinction between ‘value’ and ‘values’
  • vernaallee: Great McKinsey article by Shoshana Zuboff laying out value network type principles and logic for business http://bit.ly/cm9gbH
  • CreatvEmergence: If we evolve our methods, there is change. If we evolve our values, assumptions & principles, there is transformation.

A discussion on whether the term ‘enterprise-architecture’ is becoming more of a hindrance than a help, and options to replace it:

  • taotwit: @ironick  @RSessions very similar to @chrisdpotts (author of FruITion) and my definition –  Is the term EA becoming unhelpful?
  • ironick: @taotwit @chrisdpotts first turned me on to the “better” def. of enterprise! the problem is not just the term #entarch; it’s the baggage.
  • taotwit: @ironick  @Chrisdpotts discussed this over lunch last Friday –  I agree with the baggage and have begun to drop EA language on my website  http://bit.ly/cQUefl in favour of ‘Business Change Design’ – @alecsharp is also adopting BCD – BCD is centred around ‘Design-Thinking’ and ‘Systems-Thinking’ or what Gartner call ‘Hybrid-Thinking’.
  • ironick: @taotwit glad to hear it. BCD has two of my favorite words in it: change and design!
  • chrisdpotts: @taotwit @ironick @RSessions The term EA is brilliant. Some ‘interpretations’ of it are unhelpful. <strongly agree #entarch
  • chrisdpotts: @taotwit @ironick I take advantage of EA’s ‘baggage’ at every opportunity! // Your Enterprise Architects are, of course, part of your enterprise’s architecture. #entarch <good point…
  • ironick: @chrisdpotts example? inquiring minds want to know 🙂
  • chrisdpotts: @ironick Example of?
  • ironick: @chrisdpotts an example of how you take advantage of EA’s baggage.
  • chrisdpotts: @ironick In 3-5 years’ time no-one knows for sure what tech will be available. So IT-centric #entarch has, presumably, a short-term horizon.
  • chrisdpotts: @ironick More baggage handling: you can be the architect of Capital if you like, but I’m an architect of Enterprise.
  • ironick: @chrisdpotts ok… IT-centric #entarch has short-term horizon. I don’t understand how you “take advantage” of that.
  • chrisdpotts: @ironick Opens the door for real #entarch once people know that tech-centric ‘EA’ can in truth only be short-term
  • ironick: @chrisdpotts oh, think I’m getting it. U use #entarch baggage 2 box in trad. IT-centric EA, so u r free 2 do more biz-centric EA? Love it.
  • chrisdpotts: @ironick No need to box in. Free to do its very best. // But overall, yes, that’s the kind of thing that I meant.
  • chrisdpotts: RT @RSessions: @chrisdpotts You can say that about any group in an enterprise. |me: please clarify which Tweet this refers to
  • chrisdpotts: RT @RSessions: @ironick @chrisdpotts Focus on stable capabilities and adaptive implementations. |me: What?
  • chrisdpotts: RT @RSessions: @chrisdpotts “a small group of X can have a hugely positive influence” |me: true, but in #entarch , not by being ‘glue’
  • RSessions: @tetradian @chrisdpotts @taotwit @ironick Interpretations are all we have.
  • itraor: Good point, ambition isn’t fact. RT @RSessions: @tetradian @chrisdpotts @taotwit @ironick Interpretations are all we have.

One of those all-too-usual lengthy-but-interesting discussions about the nature and role of enterprise-architecture:

  • Cybersal: @taotwit et al IMO Bonkers a bit strong….you have to give a certain amount of context when you are discussing anything in the EA space
  • taotwit: @Cybersal et al ‘a certain amount of context’?? (clears throat) ..  how very ‘British’ (understated) that sounds to me! The EA community cannot agree on the two words that should define it – Enterprise and Architecture. I’m sorry but that sounds like a candidate for the ‘JS Bonkers Situation Award’ if ever I’ve heard of one! #entarch #ea2010
  • Cybersal: @taotwit Do you think the art community agrees what the meaning of art is? // it’s important that each enterprise can come to a agreement of what its meaning of EA is
  • taotwit: @Cybersal Oh, very ‘one hand clapping’ 😀 ..  Finance community knows what Bookkeeping is and what a CFO vs a Chrtrd Accountant does! // Whatever EA is, it needs to be at least as clear to understand its value to the biz as Finance – ‘I’m afraid Art’ won’t cut it!
  • taotwit: @Cybersal I agree, it’s essential while we such confusion in the community // If defining ‘EA’ is the first step, are there a set of tools/lenses to help us discover the meaning of EA? Or should the EA community be creating them?
  • Cybersal: @taotwit I’ll try and make that clearer in my paper. Have to finish it today, so will sign off now.
  • chrisdpotts: @taotwit @RSessions @ironick @Cybersal @bmichelson I like it that #entarch means different things to people. The diversity is valuable.
  • chrisdpotts: @taotwit Observation: when #entarch is actually about enterprise and architecture, it’s more valuable than when it’s about something else.
  • Cybersal: If you #entarch guys had been at the ethnography presentation I attended yesterday, you’d be a lot more chilled out about this defn issue.
  • taotwit: @Cybersal  oh great, just what we need another ‘ology’ – that’ll land with my clients (*not*)! >> not chilling yet #entarch // sorry, I meant ‘graphy’ point still stands – obviously *not* Chilling over #entarch 😮
  • chrisdpotts: @Cybersal I’m chilled! #entarch
  • Cybersal: @taotwit all he said was ’embrace uncertainty’. The examples he gave were really interesting – will share next time we meet.
  • taotwit: @Cybersal Oh, no wonder you’ve gone all Zen on me 🙂 (Oh shoot, I just remembered my Twitter handle has TAO in it – oh the irony!!)
  • chrisdpotts: @taotwit I’m a mentor to Enterprise Architects. They choose meaning for “Enterprise Architecture” in context of their enterprise #entarch
  • taotwit: @chrisdpotts  OK, so like I said to @Cybersal – perhaps we shld be developing the tools for discovering the right EA for the E #entarch
  • taotwit: @thoughttrans  hmm, seems a bit like tautology (depending on what we mean by ‘Enterprise’) – my def  inc. business/IT/people/process et al
  • thoughttrans: @taotwit maybe. im just sick of seeing all the EA talk centered around IT with a minor mention of biz
  • ironick: @taotwit agree that #entarch label generates more confusion than insight, and don’t agree with @chrisdpotts that such confusion is valuable
  • taotwit: @thoughttrans I think we are slightly (only slightly mind) less focused on IT in Europe compared to the USA
  • chrisdpotts: @ironick @taotwit I said that the diversity is valuable, not the confusion. #entarch
  • chrisdpotts: @taotwit Discovering the right EA for the E: absolutely! Buildings are not all designed/constructed using same method/framework #entarch
  • chrisdpotts: @ironick I know what #entarch is, and so do you – and I expect we each know it to be something different. Diversity, yes, but confusion???
  • thoughttrans: @taotwit I think Europe is ahead of US in #bizarch & #entarch too
  • chrisdpotts: RT @thoughttrans: @taotwit I think Europe is ahead of US in #bizarch & #entarch too | me: interesting observation
  • thoughttrans: @chrisdpotts not when ur watching the train leave & ur trying to get ppl 2 get on board!
  • ironick: @chrisdpotts 3rd person reading #entarch in text wouldn’t know if their meaning, or mine, or yours or @RSessions. I call that confusion. // diversity works only in all meanings share a common core. meanings of #entarch no longer share a common core. 2+ diff cores… // 1st core for #entarch is technology architecture. 2nd core for #entarch is business arch.
  • Cybersal: @ironick For me, core of #entarch is neithr biz or tech. entarch is fundamentally about coherence & relationship between diff architectures
  • chrisdpotts: @ironick Technology cannot be core of #entarch. Technology has no enterprise. Perhaps that’s where any confusion starts. // The context around a person’s use of the term #entarch communicates their particular meaning.
  • ironick: @chrisdpotts agree. yet in US #entarch was originally used to refer ONLY to enterprise-wide IT arch. Still the most common meaning in US.
  • ironick: @chrisdpotts given enough context all terms r clear. Does that mean NO term is EVER uselessly ambiguous? context negotiation 4 #entarch sux
  • chrisdpotts: @ironick First context question for #entarch: is the speaker/writer actually referring to IT Architecture?
  • ironick: @chrisdpotts (1) typical ans: Oh no, r #entarch is MUCH broader than IT Arch. We also arch apps & data! 2 him: IT meant  svr, stor, net inf // (2) so this 1st context question leads to LOTS more time wasting-questions “coming to terms”
  • chrisdpotts: @ironick It was a question I was mentally asking, not out load.  Apologies for not making this clear.
  • ironick: @KrisMeukens lack of shared understanding of #entarch is one of the things killing it!
  • thoughttrans: No #entarch or #bizarch will be worth a damn without input from the executive and business community.

A couple of lengthy yet relevant reminiscences from Nigel Green:

  • taotwit: “The theme that I find most compelling, is the importance of human behaviour, social norms and planned and unplanned events to information systems. Moreover, how these aspects, if left unexplored, often become the barriers to adoption of IT-enabled change. What I find most interesting is the search for the sweet-spot between classical engineering approaches and the early examination of adoption barriers. It seems to me that some of the most successful Web-enabled businesses (the likes of Google, Amazon and eBay) have used an adoption-led approach to the development of products and services. Corporate IT, in contrast, often continues to take a more traditional approach to ‘engineering’ their way to a solution. Is this difference in approach where we might find the long-sought value within the enterprise from the world of the Web?” – Snippet from my blog: Systems Thinking and the Web JULY 22, 2007
  • taotwit: ” …the notion that a business is comprised of multiple, interacting, ‘Systems’ of people, processes and technologies (agents of the system) that cannot be viewed in isolation one from another but accepts each system/sub-system works within a unique set of values”. ” …how can ‘Systems Thinking’ be introduced to the CxOs without appearing to be too academic The rule is to avoid talking about Systems Thinking and, for that matter, SOA. Instead, the discussion is focused on delivering business value around a topic that is front-of-mind for the board: Compliance, Profitability, Green-agenda or Strategy execution might be such topics. Then the trick is to use simple ‘Systems Thinking’ techniques and tools (akin to S.W.O.T. or Forcefield and Mindmaps or PowerPoint) to start to describe the emergent services”. – Snippet from my blog: Why Service Orientation should start with Systems and not (always) end in systems FEBRUARY 01, 2009

A brief discussion on an article in New Yorker by Malcolm Gladwell that critiques some of the (to me) over-hyped assumptions about social-media and social change:

  • SAlhir: “Social media can’t provide what social change has always required.” RT @jorgebarba – Malcolm Gladwell http://icio.us/w3rgk4 <some very good points on limitations of weak-ties in social-networks, and the role of strong-ties in high-risk change
  • oscarberg: As authors I like both Gladwell & Shirky. But Shirky understands current paradigm shift in tech & media, Gladwell doesn’t <may well be true about tech, but I suspect Gladwell has a better grasp of how deep-layer social change actually happens…
  • oscarberg: RT @joannejacobs: Why Gladwell is wrong about social media http://bit.ly/9hwEPS – useful (& appropriate) crowdsourced responses. <again, I suspect they’re conveniently missing the point about surface-layer versus deep-layer – ‘litany’ versus ‘mythic’ in Causal Layered Analysis terms

IT-architecture, IT-systems development and other IT-related matters:

  • oscarberg: There is agile IT and non-agile IT. The latter will be outsourced, the former will be driven by business. // Agile Enterprise IT = IT that enables a business to quickly change & adjust to new conditions <much the same applies to #entarch
  • oscarberg: Consumer IT is not a threat to enterprises, but an opportunity to become more agile. Embrace it!
  • bartleeten: 10 Metrics for a New #CIO http://j.mp/aW0NO3 <concrete, practical advice
  • johanlindberg: I hear a lot of talk about “teaming up with business” from IT people but very little about “teaming up with IT” from business people. #entarch #itarch

Society, culture and corporate social responsibility:

  • Eclectopedic: RT @BillNigh: Finance profession dominates Forbes 400 wealthiest list; why? Isn’t finance just a function? How about those who actually MAKE stuff? <ans: that’s because finance ‘makes’ (aka ‘invents’) money, and our society is foolish enough to measure wealth in terms of imaginary-money rather than anything real… #society #economics
  • SAlhir: RT @VenessaMiemis: NewsWeek: New World Order: Tribal ties – becoming more important than borders http://ht.ly/2K5Tv via @MartijnLinssen #society #culture #economics
  • amcafee: Congrats to @dontapscott on the release of Macrowikinomics today: http://bit.ly/aqVnZI #economics #society
  • joemckendrick: World War I will officially end this Sunday — it’s true! Germany will pay last WWI reparation installment. RT @jevon http://bit.ly/aARIuh <yikes… insanity/absurdity on a global scale…
  • ChristineArena: RT @SarahRobinson: I am seeing so many kids without basic life/responsibility skills. No idea how to do anything or figure anything out. #sad <ongoing theme of imaginary ‘rights’ vs real-world responsibilities
  • ancillaryIPs: DARPA works out that our future relies on geeks …. and robots. Where’s the rest of the world? http://fb.me/GQrlTZQe <looking on in horror, mostly… whilst Japan and Korea build robots to look after the elderly, it often feels that the only interest in robots in the US is about finding new ways to kill people from ever further ‘safe distance’ – seems like something is seriously wrong in there, folks… not good at all, for anyone, including the US itself…

And, of course, the meritorious marvels of the miscellanea:

  • joemckendrick: RT @mattsingley Amazing photo collection, taken in COLOR in Russia at the start of the 1900s http://bit.ly/aAEp90 <beautiful indeed; also a stunning technical achievement, both in the original photography and in the restoration by US Library of Congress
