  • tetradian: r @greblhad: “Have you experienced regional character in expression of #entarch?” IT ‘ent-arch’, not really; whole-of-ent arch, huge diffs
  • greblhad: @tetradian can you share some insight as to what these diffs in WofEA where?
  • tetradian: @greblhad regional impact on EA: mainly phys.environment + region-culture + region-politics/economics – more detail in post later today

  • SAlhir: Complex Systems (Complex Adaptive Systems) form the foundational paradigm for all things “social” (Individuals,Teams,Crowds,Communities…)

Another discussion about the role and knowledge of the enterprise-architect:

  • AussiMike: Noted some of your comments recently on how you feel more of a facilitator than the creator of an EA when working with a client // Question is how relevant/important is it for the consultant EA to have deep industry/sector knowledge in order to fulfil that role?
  • tetradian: <post> “How much should an enterprise-architect know and do?” (for @AussiMike) http://bit.ly/578h6u
  • flowchainsensei: @tetradian When you discuss EA I never know if your talking about EA(1) or EA(2). What’s your default context?
  • tetradian: @flowchainsensei which are ‘EA(1)’ vs ‘EA(2)’? my default context is architecture vs design – how things fit together vs implement’n-detail // same principles apply at every scale of ‘EA’, from detail-level IT-infrastructure to whole-of-enterprise // I guess my real ‘default context’ in EA is methodology – ie. design of practice, rather than details of practice outcomes
  • flowchainsensei: @tetradian Distinction: EA(1) concerned with arch of org wrt “information flow”; EA(2) concerned with arch of org wrt “value flow”
  • tetradian: @flowchainsensei probly more EA(2) value-flow (‘cos that’s what business wants) – but ideally EA(3), arch of interweaving of *all* flows.., // …(info, value, things, people-relns etc) + links to overall values + static/dynamic structures etc to support these… // ..ie. architecture of enterprise *as a whole*, not solely of one part (eg. info/value-flow) or one domain (eg. IT)
  • bvanzomeren: @tetradian enjoyed yr ea knowledge blog. do you think it’s wise to combine architect (global) and designer (detail) in 1 person in projects?
  • tetradian: @bvanzomeren combining architect and designer in 1 person: usually have to in small projects! but increasingly unwise as projects get larger // …’design’ & ‘architect’ need different mindsets/tasks – eg. analysis vs synthesis – gets harder to balance w increased scale
  • bvanzomeren: @tetradian my experience: many discussions are about details (design), not about architecture .
  • tetradian: @bvanzomeren “discussions are about details” – agreed, and must be, because detail-design is how we realise (make real) the architecture
  • breadedcod: @tetradian Put simply, it’s the ideas and not the tools.
  • tetradian: r @breadedcod ‘ideas, not tools’ – #entarch is just one idea, really: that things work better when we think about how they work together 🙂
  • breadedcod: @tetradian Lego Bricks: work best when you have an idea & think of how they might work together. Still need skill to build something tho’ 🙂
  • tetradian: r @breadedcod huh? skill? who needs skill? that’s what computers is for, ain’t it? built-in ‘best-practice’ an’ all tha’? 🙂

  • oscarberg: An org can’t own social networks, only encourage & empower employees to use their networks for value creation // Whether an org should own info about its employees’ social networks or not is irrelevant – accessing & using is relevant
  • oscarberg: RT @alphalo: People need information to self-organize ; transparency in an organization allows that information to flow. // It’s not the #e20 techn that’s important, but the #e20 design principles to apply for solutions/tools, org, practices, culture…
